Gandalf - O Mago
Ele é um Maia, espírito angelical do mundo tolkienano, e costumava andar com Nienna com quem aprendeu a paciência e a compaixão (Silmarillion), mas diz-se que era conselheiro de Irmo Lórien. Foi à Terra Média para ser um dos conselheiros dos homens e impedir que a escuridão voltasse.
Durante a Terceira Era da Terra-Média, foi realizada uma reunião entre os Valar em Aman sobre o que fazer com relação a Terra-Média, pois os Valar ainda se preocupavam com o destino de Arda. A conclusão da reunião foi enviar seres de sua elevada ordem para combater na Terra-Média. Só que estes não poderiam se apresentar na sua forma de poder e esplendor que apresentam em Valinor, teriam que ir em corpos mortais. Foram então selecionados cinco Maiar para a viagem.
Como líder foi escolhido Curunnír, conhecido por Saruman, sendo este o primeiro a desembarcar nos Portos Cinzentos. Além deste, outros dois "magos", Alatar e Pallando, ou Magos Azuis, também desembarcaram. Por Yavanna, foi enviado um que chamavam de Radagast, e Manwë escolheu Olórin, Mithrandir para os elfos e Gandalf para os homens, pois possuía muita estima por este. Gandalf foi o último a desembarcar, e Círdan, Senhor dos Portos, logo percebeu que ele deveria ser o mais importante e lhe entregou o Anel de Fogo, Narya para que Gandalf fosse seu novo guardião.

Gandalf - The Wizard
He is a Maia , angelic spirit tolkienano world, and used to walk with Nienna who learned patience and compassion ( Silmarillion ) , but it is said that a counselor of Irmo Lorien. Went to Middle Earth to be a counselor of men and prevent the darkness returned.
During the Third Age of Middle-earth , a meeting between the Valar in Aman on what to do about Middle-earth was made because the Valar still worried about the fate of Arda . The conclusion of the meeting was to send a high order of beings to fight in Middle-earth . Only they could not be presented in form of power and splendor that feature in Valinor , would have to go in mortal bodies . We then selected five Maiar for the trip.
As a leader was chosen Curunnír known as Saruman , being the first to land at the Grey Havens . Besides this , two other " wizards " , and Alatar Pallando or Blue Wizards also landed . By Yavanna , who was sent Radagast called , and chosen Olórin Manwe , Mithrandir to the Elves and Gandalf for men , for he had great respect for this . Gandalf was the last to disembark , and Cirdan , Lord of the Havens , soon realized that he should be the most important and gave him the Ring of Fire , Narya to Gandalf to be his new guardian .
